01. The need for Sustainability Leadership and the Sustainability2040.org movement

Our world is at an unprecedented crossroads right now. The need for Conscious Leadership and Systems Thinking is evident now more than ever. The business-as-usual approach is failing to meet and solve the Local and often Global issues we face today, including Climate Change. It is clear that what is essential to meet the sustainability needs in all sectors of our communities now, is Sustainability Leadership. While encompassing environmental, social and economical aspects, the concept of Sustainability Leadership serves us with a holistic approach and novel solutions which strengthen us in the face of multifaceted obstacles we encounter within our communities.

In light of this, the Sustainability2040.org movement was born to create an ecosystem of socially responsible and environmentally conscious leaders with the right Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes that help bring about Systems Transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

01. Which Engagement should I join through (A or B)?

02. What is the commitment needed to be a Core-Team Member of Sustainability2040.org?

Coming from a manifold of sectors, we understand that you may have work, educational and personal commitments to manage while engaging as a Core-Team member of the Sustainability2040.org movement.

If you are chosen as a Core-Team member, you would be admitted to the first Cohort of ‘Sustainability Leadership Advocates Programme’, as we believe that all members of our Core-Team should be equipped with the necessary knowledge and capacity to advocate for Sustainability Leadership. The programme would be carried out through two hour sessions every weekend, for two months starting on the 26th of September 2021, and the successful completion of the programme would be mandatory for you to be enrolled as a Core-Team member of Sustainability2040.org.

Through the Sustainability Leadership Advocates programme, the Core-Team members will become a part of Sri Lanka’s first ever ‘Community of Practice’ (CoP) on Sustainability Leadership, which will serve as an exclusive space to learn, engage and share best practices. This CoP will continue to be nurtured under the Sustainbility2040.org movement even after the completion of the Sustainability Leadership Advocates programme. Members of the CoP would have the opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals and engage in community discussions which will be beneficial for everyone to achieve new and meaningful viewpoints and solutions, instead of quick fixes for the visible symptoms of deeper issues in our communities.

As a member of the CoP, you would be expected to contribute with your knowledge, expertise and ideas rather than having a set time period to engage with the others. Thus the time commitment needed for the CoP will be flexible.

📌 As the prime focus of the Sustainability2040.org movement is to promote and empower Sustainability Leadership within our communities over the next 20 years, the Core-Team members are expected to be life-long practitioners of Sustainability Leadership wherever they may be, work or live.

03. Why should the Core-Team members join the ‘Sustainability Leadership Advocates’ Programme?

Sustainability Leadership Advocates is an exclusive programme curated to welcome the Core-Team members of Sustainability2040.org and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge on Sustainability Leadership, as we believe that everyone who is part of the Core-Team should have a sound apprehension of what they advocate for.

Facilitated by IMPACT VOICES - The Social Innovation Intermediary, in partnership with the British Council, this is a transformative leadership support programme to empower all incoming Core-Team members by engaging them through a structured fellowship and a capacity development programme.

The programme will also provide you with a basic understanding on Sustainability Leadership and Systems Thinking, and lay the foundation for your advocacy and practice efforts in the topic of Sustainability Leadership.

04. What is the ‘Community of Practice’ (CoP) for Sustainability Leadership?

As much as we advocate for Sustainability Leadership as individuals and/or organisations, it is important to create an enabling environment and a conducive space for practitioners to get connected and learn from each other while promoting this concept among their peers and within spheres of influence. To meet this need, Sri Lanka’s first ever Community of Practice (CoP) for Sustainability Leadership will be created through the ‘Sustainability Leadership Advocates’ programme. The CoP will continue as an exclusive safe space for the Core-Team members of Sustainability2040.org, enabling them to learn, engage and share best practices even beyond the two month long capacity building programme.

The CoP will create unique opportunities which will deepen the knowledge and expertise of Sustainability Leaders through interaction, community discussions with experts from different fields, mentorship, and capacity building. This helps achieve new and meaningful viewpoints and solutions, instead of quick fixes for the visible symptoms of deeper issues in our communities. Collective intelligence is indispensable to harness the best and diverse efforts required for collective action. In light of this, the CoP will be the launching pad for systemic change maneuvered by Sustainability Leaders.

This CoP will also play an important role in strategising and planning advocacy work to transform systems and inculcate Sustainability Leadership at ALL Levels, across ALL sectors.

05. Will the programme be carried out online or in-person?

To ensure the safety of all of us during the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to conduct all programmes and engagement sessions online for the next two months.

However, we may have some in-person engagements in the future when the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted and it is safer to meet in-person, strictly adhering to the health guidelines discerned by the authorities.

06. What else should I know about this programme?

💬 Language

As most of our communications, capacity building programmes and engagement sessions with the international community will be carried out in English, the Core-Team members are expected to be proficient in English.

Connectivity / Devices

As we will be working predominantly online, a reliable internet connection would be required.

We highly encourage you to join from a personal computer/laptop or tablet for you to meaningfully engage during the sessions and meetings.
